Go to a hospital first if

  • Swelling is making it hard to breathe, swallow or open your mouth
  • Bleeding will not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • You have a high fever along with facial swelling
  • You have a head injury or a possible broken jaw

What to do until you are seen

Severe toothache. Rinse with warm salt water, and take a painkiller that is safe for you. A cold pack on the cheek helps. Avoid putting aspirin on the gum, as it burns the tissue.

A knocked-out adult tooth. Pick it up by the crown, without touching the root. Rinse it briefly if it is dirty. Try to put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Time matters here, so call straight away.

A broken tooth. Save any pieces, rinse your mouth, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax.

A lost crown or filling. Keep the crown safe and do not glue it back. Chew on the other side and book soon, because the exposed tooth is at risk.

An abscess. A painful swelling or a pimple on the gum means infection. Do not try to burst it. Even if it drains and feels better, the source remains.

Pain after an extraction. Pain that gets worse after two or three days may be a dry socket. Call the clinic.

What usually happens next

The first aim is to find the cause and stop the pain. That may mean starting a root canal, draining an infection, fixing a broken tooth or removing a tooth that cannot be saved. Once you are comfortable, the rest of the treatment can be planned.

Frequently asked questions

Are you open 24 hours?

No. The clinic is open Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 9pm, and Sunday from 11am to 1:30pm. Outside those times, or for a life-threatening problem, go to a hospital.

Will antibiotics fix my toothache?

They can calm an infection for a while, but they cannot treat the source inside the tooth. It will return unless the tooth itself is treated.

Should I go to the dentist if the pain has stopped?

Yes. Pain that stops suddenly can mean the nerve has died, while the infection continues.

Can a loose crown wait a few days?

A day or two is usually fine if it is not painful, as long as you keep it safe. Try not to leave it longer.
